Programs, Recital and Awards

I have really been behind on blogging which would not be a big deal if this was not also our family journal so I am trying to post some events I missed blogging about this spring.

Katelyn and Allison had their spring concerts for school. They both did great. Allie was really looking forward to her concert. Kate loves to sing but was not very thrilled with some of the songs she had to sing.

Allie had her dance recital this week and did a great job. She is always so happy on stage. After her performance we went out to dinner with Grandma, Grandpa and Sandy's family. We appreciate all the family support we have.

In late April we got a letter from the school stating that Katelyn had won 3rd place in a essay contest sponsored by the Lions Club so I got to go to an assembly in her honor. I am very proud on my girls.

On the last day of school Katelyn was given a special award for her reading performance in AR. After a special assemble Kate and 10 other 3rd graders got to go on a limo ride with the Principal. They cruised around town and went out for ice cream. She worked very hard to earn this and had a great time!

The girls had a great last day of school. The both had super great teachers this year and look forward to next year. As for Ryan and I, we are glad to be done with PTA and volunteering at the school for a while. We are all looking forward to a relaxing summer.

Easter

This year we celebrated Easter with Grandma Debbie and Grandpa Ivan a day early because they were flying off to the Cayman Islands on Easter. We had our annual Easter egg hunt in their backyard which is always the highlight of the day.

I was in charge of cooking the Easter Ham this year which was a big stress but it turned out wonderful. I was very please. I was most pleased with the great weather! It was such a beautiful weekend. On Easter Sunday we got up to see what the Easter Bunny brought, went to Church and spent the rest of the afternoon with just our little family playing games. We are not used to quiet Sundays because we are usually with my whole family but we did enjoy ourselves.

When I was trying to take pictures of the kids before church Ryan kept trying to show me his "ninja moves." He is such a ham. As always I bought the girls new Easter dresses, but this year I did not buy matching dresses which apparently was not following family tradition so they decided to wear their matching outfits from last spring so they could match since it was a holiday. I never know what those two are thinking, they are always one step ahead of me that is for sure.

It's a Girl!

The Elizondo family is expecting a new baby girl on September 13, 2009. We are so excited and are looking forward to buying more pink.

On the day of the ultrasound the girls stayed home from school.

We had our appointment in the morning, then went shopping, out for lunch, and after we sent dad back to work we headed out for more shopping.

Ryan was so cute during the ultrasound, he was a little worried so he kept rubbing my arm and was listening to everything the Tech said. The girls would giggle every time the baby moved. We all thought that it was most likely a girl since I was sick like I was with Katelyn and Allison but it is good to have that confirmation. We had a great day and look forward to our precious little baby girl's arrival.

"Spring Chicks"

I just wanted to wish my three little "Spring Chicks" a Happy Birthday! Allie, Grace and Katelyn all had their birthdays over this last few weeks. It is fun to celebrate birthdays in the spring when we have spring weather but this year has been a little cold. All three girls lucked out and had pretty warm birthdays. I had the privilege of making all three girls their birthday cakes which I am not very good at yet but I am hoping to take a cake decorating class soon.

Allie and Katelyn both wanted another American Girl doll and a bunch of clothes and stuff to go with the dolls. They picked the dolls they wanted right after Christmas so it was kind of a long wait, especially for Katelyn since her birthday is last. We got on the Internet and picked out a bunch of cute little clothes and accessories which my mom and I could not resist so the girls got the "Hook up" on doll clothes.

Allie decided to have her best friend McKenna come over and play all day and a family party in the evening. Mckenna and Allie's birthdays are just a few days apart so they decided they wanted to give each other $10 and have me take them to Kings so they could each pick something out. Good old Kings!

Katelyn decided to go out for a girls night out with Allie, Alyssa, Aunt Kristy, Aunt Sandy, Aunt Mandy, Cynthia and I. We went to the Texas Roadhouse, Shopping, then to the new Hannah Montana Movie. We had a great time. We celebrated with the family on Sunday. She had to go to school on her birthday so she got candles in her favorite breakfast and got to open her presents in the morning.
She lucked out because her class was having a big party that day so she got to party all day. Grace got a cute loving family doll house and all the accessories for all the rooms which made my girls want there loving family doll house again. Yea right, you have an entire playroom dedicated to your barbies. We can't fit one more doll house in there, besides all the new barbie stuff you got for you birthday's and Easter. Well girls, I love you and I hope you all had fun on your special days. Thanks for being so special!

Great-Great-Grandma Hackett

One year ago we went to Vancouver to pick up my Great Grandmother and her daughter Dixie and took them up to Seattle, WA to stay with my Aunt Gaylene for spring break. We like to go out at least once a year to visit with Grandma and this year Allie decided that she was going to spend her birthday in Washington with her Great-Great-Grandma and Aunt Gaylene. We had a great time going to the Seattle Aquarium, the Children’s Museum at the Space Needle, shopping, eating out and on the last day we went to a wonderful Doll Museum. Even though Grandma Hackett was 99 years old she came along with us and never complained. We made her use a wheel chair on the long days which she did not like because she is so sweet and independent but she trooped along and never complained. On a couple of the evenings my mother and I set the video camera and interviewed great-grandma. She modestly told us all about her life while we sat and anticipated our favorite stories from when she was a little girl. We had a great time and I will never forget all the many trips we took to visit our beloved grandmother over the years. In February we went to Vancouver to visit Grandma Hackett one last time for her 100 Birthday. We got into town on Friday night and a wonderful visit with her. She came over to see with the whole family at the Hotel (between everybody we had almost 20 hotel rooms). She had a great time meeting all of her new great-great grandchildren that had been born this year. She kept saying “I am so proud of my family.” After visiting at the hotel Jairo and I took the kids over to grandma’s to spend some more time with her. Grandma and her daughter Dixie, have a huge mini click collection, so every year when we go out to visit her the girls like to find there favorite clocks and count how many they have. They also love to look at all of the old pictures of their ancestors and listen to stories of their heritage. The whole house is covered in breakable items so trying to keep Ryan contained is a little nerve racking but grandma always seemed to calm my nerves with her loving laugh and smart wit. Ryan kept going over to grandma to tell her that he loved her with a light hug and a pat on her legs. We had a great time and will never forget all of the wonderful memories and life lessons we got from our beautiful Great-Great Grandma Hackett.
The following day just 30 minutes before her big birthday celebration was to begin we got a call that that she had an accident and was only able to make her party by spirit. After prayer we spent the day the way grandma would have wanted us to, at her party remembering her and celebrating her life. My girls are having a hard time with grandma's being gone, but the peace I feel knowing she is part of our eternal family comforts me. She no longer has pain in her body and has been reunited with her loved ones on the other side. I am sure she is able to watch over us more closly now which makes me want to be a better wife, friend and mother like her. Me, not being a person that lets out much emotion will leave it at that with a excellent tribute my mother wrote for our Grandma.

She was a dynamic figure, a mathematical genius, and candy lovers everywhere swoon over her paper thin peanut brittle and fancy milk chocolates creams. She was a private citizen, yet she had a worldwide fan club. Children trust and adore her.

She was born February 10th 1909. She was the mother of four children, and lays claim to 8 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and 16 great-great grandchildren.

She could tat tablecloths and hem dishtowels faster than a whole factory of Taiwanese slave laborers.

She is so good looking that her beauty radiated through a phone line and made a man fall in love with her at the mere sound of her voice, asking her to be his wife.

Her extraordinary cooking talents have earned her fame throughout the great Northwest. In her younger years she could bake 40 pies, whip up a double batch of strawberry jam, and have dinner on the table by 5pm.

Her laugh is contagious and her wit extraordinaire. She can warm an entire room with the beauty of her smile.

She sews, she tats, she bakes, she laughs, and compared to all the other Grandmas of the world she rules the universe.

Using only a hoe and a large glass of water, she once single-handedly defended 3 small children from a swarm of ferocious army ants. Later, she bested that feat when saving the same children from a rattlesnake at an Oregon rest stop.

Years ago she discovered the meaning of life, but refuses to write it down, challenging the rest of us to discover it for ourselves. She has made extraordinary four course meals using only a spatula and a toaster oven. She is a master gardener, and a world champion food canner.

She was known to lead large groups of relief society women through difficult obstacles with unflagging speed for over three decades. She has always given her all to the church and then squeezed out a little bit more to make sure she no one was left behind.

She is an expert in cake decorating, a veteran of love, and has been rumored to have stolen the heart of the former Price Charming of South Dakota.

She once read her grandchildren Pollyanna, Little Women and Nancy Drew all in one day and still had time to refurbish an entire living room that evening. She knows the exact location of every food item in the supermarket. She has seen two world wars, a great depression, the advent of the automobile, the airplane, radio, TV, and watched Neil Armstrong walk on the moon, and by now she has probably talked to Elvis.

She was born in a time when there was no penicillin and when not everybody had indoor plumbing. She knows how to pluck a chicken, but I’ve never seen her do it. She’s worn high button shoes and attended a one room school house. She survived the a year long bout of rheumatic fever.

She has always been active in her church and cultural affairs, as well as being a devoted wife, mother, and most important to me, the kind of grandmother who gave you all the love you needed and then a pinch more to grow on.

Not a day of my life goes by that I don’t think about how much I loved my Grandma and what an influence she always was to me. She made us all better people just by being in our lives and teaching us by her example. She made our path through life a little more bright and our burdens a little more light by sharing with us your wisdom and grace.

Grandma passed away Saturday February 7th just moments before her 100th birthday party. She lived a full and joyful life. She taught us the meaning of love and compassion. We will miss you Grandma. Thank you for all the memories you gave us. You will always be in our hearts.

Quick Update!

So I have gotten a lot of flack for being a “blog slacker” lately so I decided I would try to give a QUICK update. I don’t know where we have been the last few months but if you look close in the corners of my house you can see that we haven’t been home. It all started with a great trip to California and ended somewhere after a long string of PTA events.

We took a trip to Vancouver, WA in early February to visit Great-Great Grandma Hackett, which I will post about later.

Had a great time celebrating Valentines Day!

Attended the funeral of the most amazing Matriarch in the world. My Great Grandma Hackett!

Built a Snowman!

Jairo’s sweet mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. She quickly had a mastectomy and has just started her first round of chemotherapy. She is very strong and so far is doing very well but I worry about Jairo. He has been spending a lot of time visiting with her, making sure she is ok. The whole family is really pulling together.

We spent a much needed weekend in Island Park with some of our dear friends.

Thanks Troy and Kristin!

Katelyn did a cute little puppet show for the Gifted and Talented program she has been invited to be involved with the past two years. She gets to go to Mr. Winston one afternoon a week and do fun projects.

Planned a school carnival for the PTA. Thought we might “up” our numbers from last year to 250, but ended up with over 550 people. Crazy, Crazy, Crazy! In fact so crazy that between trying to manage everything, running to the store and Doug’s Meat to get more food several times, I didn’t have time to take any pictures. Anyhow, I am grateful for all of the wonderful help I had from my amazing friends (especially Steph who gave a ton time all the while battling the stomach flu.)

Two days after the carnival I was in charge of a fun little Primary Activity that we did in conjunction with a “Ward Humanitarian Project.”

Later that day Katelyn had her first Piano Festival which I am proud to say she got a “Superior” for both of her pieces. Then that night she had her Piano Recital. She did very well so she and I snuck off for ice cream afterwards.

This week the school counselor ask me if the PTA could help her put together DNA kits for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd graders so the PTA came to the rescue again, fingerprinting and plucking hair from over 400 kids in under 5 hours. The police officer that was in charge was amazed at our skill. We responded with a “Don’t ever underestimate the power of the PTA, we are Mom’s on a mission.” (Although my mission is almost over, next year I am going to sit home and rock my new baby and give the opportunity of being over the Sunrise PTA to some other sweet mom.)

I’m sure I missed a lot but now that things are calming down, the big events are over, no more morning sickness, my family just got over the stomach flu, Birthday season is starting, I don’t want to think about to much or I might start having flashbacks. Just kidding! I hope all is well and we are going to enjoy a relaxing spring break.
